signature headaches in Mail.....
......this is really meant to be one of the easiest things to do but clearly not!
I have just re-developed my branding - and as such, have a new email signature. I created the HTML file, uploaded to my server, opened safari, saved the HTML file as a "web archive" in home>library>mail>signatures re-opened Mail, typed my test email, accessed signature pane, there is my lovely signature in the drop down menu - displays fine - hit send. recipients can see the text of my email - but NOT my signature!!! it's a totally blank area where the image should be (no broken link message or anything like that) any ideas what I have done wrong????? this is driving me slowly insane!! cheers guys... as a quick follow-up to the above - I realise I can open the image within Preview - copy and dump it in the signature - but that is not what I want to do at all as I didn't want the sig to go through as an attachment - v annoying for recipients - hence me doing it the HTML route to avoid that!

hey Steffen......thanks for the speedy reply - I thought you had nailed it as soon as I read your post....BUT.....
just double-checked within composing prefs - the only format options I have are rich text or plain text (is currently set to rich text) - HTML is not an option in the drop-down menu  FYI - am running Leopard (10.5.4) so Mail Version 3.4 cheers! Bex

Yeah, "rich text" is fine, it'll send HTML (more specifically, the composed message has a plain text and an HTML part, as defined by the MIME standard).
Many mail clients will choose the best looking rendition out of the alternative content encodings that they can support, HTML in most cases. Apple Mail will remember your preference in that regard, IIRC. Try changing to alternative message displays using cmd-option-] and cmd-option-[, or pick one via View -> Message. Does the signature show up properly then? Cheers Steffen.

hey again Steffen.....thanks again for all your help - but still not displaying.
sent a test mail to my gmail + AAPT accounts - usual deal - can see the text of the mail, not the signature - the alternative options I can access are "long headers" and "raw source" - clicking those brings up all the coding etc - and no signature!! hmmmmm....if you mean code etc then not that I can see!
towards the bottom it states this: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v928.1) shouldn't the content type be "text/rich" as per my preferences? cheers!

In the header of the message (the bits before the first blank line) there should be a header like "Content-Type: multipart/alternative". The individual parts in the message body further down should have things like "Content-Type: text/plain" and "Content-Type: text/html".

BTW, do your emails (those that don't show the sig properly) require any rich text features at all? Maybe Mail skips the alternative encoding thing altogether if the text appears plain? Just guessing here of course, but have you tried making a word bold or something, to force HTML+plain encoding? Cheers Steffen.

Hi Steffen.....apologies for the lateness in replying - am flat out at the moment!
what I have failed SPECTACULARLY to mention in my previous postings is that the signature I have created is a complete image (.jpg file) which is uploaded to my server etc and viewing fine. I followed a tutorial online which worked seamlessly - and so to reiterate - the signature image displays fine when I create the message (having selected it in the drop down menu) - but is not viewable by the recipient! not sure this helps in anyway but best to clarify! cheers! So, what you've posted above isn't the actual signature file then. It's an empty document with just a title.

the entire source code is below - ignore the stupidly large size for my image file for the signature - my main concern at this stage is getting the thing to work!!! appreciate all your help with this..... cheers! Hmm, I just sent mail with your signature, it comes across just fine. Do you see the signature when you look at the mail in the Sent folder?

that is bizarre! and no it doesn't show in the sent folder. just to walk you through exactly what i have done as follows: 1. created HTML file - uploaded to server 2. Mail > prefs > signatures - created a dummy text signature. saved + quit 3. safari > opened HTML file (http://www.justsoho.com.au/JS_email_sig_09.jpg), saved as "web archive" file (overriding the dummy sig web archive file in Library > Mail > signatures 4. opened Mail - selected signature in drop down menu - views fine. SEND - and that's where the problem is - not viewing in recipient mail OR in sent folder. __  am tearing my hair out over this to be honest - how can a simple thing be so hard???!!!cheers! Bexford

It's of my opinion that Mail is really the simple dood's emailer, and that it cannot really perform fancy tricks and there have been a great deal of problems seeing graphic files within it - or at least, this is my experience - which is why I've always used such apps as Entourage, though in your case, something like MaxBulk Mailer might be the answer to your woes.
MaxBulk Mailer is the app that a lot of businesses use to create those full HTML styled emails. I suggest this as a possible candidate, over going mad.

hey there clockwork - many thanks for your message.
I appreciate you giving me the tip MaxBulkBailer - as I don't send thousands of emails per week (maybe a couple of hundred at most) - and to me - an image file as a signature is such a SIMPLE thing - MBB maybe overkill! am not creating fancy HTML newsletters or anything like that - in which case something like MBB would be perfect - I just want to have an image file as a signature that is not an attachment or pasted graphic. however - I have bookmarked the link you sent for sanity's sake! cheers Bexford

Horses for courses Bexford.
Doesn't need to be used for mass mailing thousands. It's ability is to have the flexibility to graphically beautify an email to please the eye. Perfect for graphic designers and makers of artful hand crafts. cheers, cw
