Unhappy iPhoto - empty Trash issue on external HD

ok, so using iPhoto 7 on my old imac (10.4) i had my iPhoto Library on an external HD. during the course of a year or so I deleted 25000+ images from the trash in iPhoto and kept just over 25000.

i recently dumped all my images into iPhoto with the intention of sorting them out from scratch. To my surprise all 50 000+ images appeared on my new machine (iPhoto 8, 10.5)

now, obviously the images I thought were deleted never were and so I'm suspecting the fact they were on an external HD might be the reason why? The reason I ask is that I have now sorted them all out and have 50+GB of images I want to remove from my HD (and know they are no longer there). Is this a reasonable expectation if I just "Empty Trash"

Also can you securely delete images? using Stuffit for example? (this didn't work on my old set up and I haven't loaded it yet on my new machine)
(corporate sensitive images not nudie stuff ,)

Hope this all makes sense. Thanks

Images that you "move to trash" in iPhoto, got to the iPhoto trash, which is seperate to the OS trash. Not sure why. It appears in the iPhoto sidebar.

yeah but when you right click the iPhoto Trash and select "Empty Trash" they disappear from there. My issue is when they were on an external HD they disappeared from iPhoto Trash but remained on the ext HD. I just want to be certain that they will delete from my new HD.
