Default Sync email saved on gmail server and hard drive before switching from POP to IMAP

I have a apple laptop, iPhone, and gMail. I currently use POP to access my gMail, but have been debating on switching to IMAP. I can figure the rest out.....

Here is my question:

Currently, gMail has emails saved on its server, but my laptop ALSO has emails saved (often different ones), several hundred if I had to guess. If I delete my gMail link in my Mail app, I also delete my old emails correct? Is there an easy way to sync my existing emails saved on my laptop with those saved on the gMail server before deleting gMail from Mail and reinstalling gMail via IMAP?

I emailed Andrew Wilson who suggested creating an IMAP account while keeping the POP one active, creating a folder under the IMAP account, and then moving all of my old emails into that folder.

Am I able to have both a POP and IMAP account of gMail active on the same computer?
Are there better ways than the above mentioned?
Or, do I simply have to go email by email and forward ones I want saved to gMail's severs?

Thanks

I just did the same thing, i had my personal domain as POP, and made a new one for the IMAP at the same time.... moved the emails over and made sure the POP account didnt re-download them again or mark it as "leave on server"

then once everything was done, removed the POP account

Why not just modify the current accoutn in mail to be IMAP? then you get to be IMAP from now on but keep all your pop downloaded mail in Mail.

Arkenstone, how would one go about doing that? I thought once you made a choice between POP and IMAP, you were stuck with the choice unless you deleted the account and made a new one?

Don't have a mac in front of me to test with but my guess would've just been to modify the account. Praps two accounts is the way to go.

ive just been reading up on this subject myself. i think you may just need to go into your gmail settings and change it from POP to IMAP then go into mail and change the pop.gmail.com to imap.gmail.com? i may be worng but that is the impression i got.
