Default Leopard & Tiger co-habiting?

G'day,

Can I instal Leopard on my eMac, and keep Tiger on there too, such that I can then choose which system to boot with?

Used to have a 3rd party app back in the System 6/7 days that would allow you to choose which one you would boot with... and of course, you can use the Startup Disk System Preference to choose which system folder to use (at least here on my Pismo G3 Powerbook running 10.4.9), but will Leopard still allow that?

Cheers

I suppose it might work if you have two partitions or separate disks and switch between them all the time.

Isn't it possible to simply partition the drive, install Tiger on one and install Leopard on the other and then hold option on startup to bring up the Boot Menu and toggle between Leopard and Tiger?

That sounds like it would work.

But why?

You'll have to swap back and forth. That sounds annoying like Boot Camp and Leopard.

Yes, you can have multiple systems on the same machine, but you can't have multiple systems on the same volume (Classic notwithstanding) -- as mentioned, you will need to either partition your internal HD and install one copy of OSX onto each, or use a separate drive.

I have three partitions on my G4/500, two with 10.3.9 and one with 10.4.11, and I can reboot between them via Startup Disc.

If you're going to repartition the internal, one tip I like to see people use is the creation of a very small partition (5 GB or so) which holds a minimum vanilla version of OSX that's had diagnostics & repair tools (DiskWarrior, Data Rescue, etc) installed to it. One of my 10.3.9 partitions is called "ToolBox" and is only 4 GB, and I'll boot into it to do permissions-checking or a DiskWarrior run on the machine's other volumes. This is especially handy if you're using a laptop as it saves carting around your Installer DVD when you need to clean things up.

I know it's probably time I moved on, but to date I still only have 1 program that I like to do scanning in, and it's OS 9, with no X updates.

I'm probably not going Leopard any time soon anyway... though the external drive is an option. I have my M9 drive, which has 10.3 on it I think, together with the diagnostic tools as suggested by Brains. I've not considered breaking up my internal drive for that use... guess it's something to consider for my next Mac...
