Default Linux distro to run VMWare images

Hi all,

I'm wanting a lighter platfom to run VMWare images I use for work on the iMac at home using BootCamp.

I found VMWare's Fusion on 10.5 okay but it crawled a bit when running some of my Windows Server apps that I need for work. At the moment they run great on a 2Gb laptop running XP (sorry I swore) but I like having a 20" screen when at home.

So apart from dropping more RAM into the 1Gb iMac, does anyone know of a Linux distribution that is compiled just to run VMWare player and it's images on an external USB drive? So then I can install that onto a BootCamp partition.

Any ideas or suggestions.

Ta

I could be wrong, but boot camp doesn't support any other os except windows. There might be a way around it

Any computer with 1GB of RAM is going to struggle. RAM is so cheap now days, may as well throw in 2x 1GB chips for under $40.

Doesn't support, doesn't mean it can't run on it!

A lot of distros run quite nicely, i am sure that mandriva and ubuntu have pretty good support, i think you will find a lot of distros have the mac drivers, they are fairly generic. Although you may have some issues with the airport drivers (solved with an external adapter).

Good luck

I've seen Solaris 10/U5 being installed using boot camp.

You can try and install other operating systems, you just wont get the Apple drivers for things like the Trackpad, Eject & Keyboard buttons, Bluetooth, AirPort etc, unless you can find them (or equivalents) for Linux.

Yeah, Ubuntu works really easily on Macbooks these days, although I have to say the MacBook 4.1 is having some issues (unfortunately the 100 I just got at work are all this model!)
