I was planning on ordering an i7 machine when I've offloaded my older Mac Pro. I have to day reading the plethora or issues coming up with these machines I think I'll wait till I can get enough cash together to get another Pro.

The risk of getting a dud is just too great imho.

Thanks Moto51, the site is almost a journal of my daily work with Apple hardware & software.

I believe this issue is software/driver based. I loaded 10.6.2 from scratch as per Apple tech support. The problem reappeared a few hours after reload. So I decided to install bootcamp and load XP SP3. After 4 days, no screen flickering or rolling. Interesting, I wrote an article about it: 27″ iMac Screen Problems Are Driver Related | ADaMac
Can anybody else confirm this on their hardware?

The thing with Windows XP is that the basic OS GUI only uses basic 2D graphics processing whilst OS X uses GPU rendering via Quartz Extreme. Best to run some 3D apps/games to further verify the claim.

On the fifth day now and XP has started flickering. I was wrong in believing this was a software/driver issue. I will report back after Apple comes onsite with what components are replaced.

Apple is coming out tomorrow with a new LCD panel and a vertical sync cable. They told me if any other machines exhibit the same issues to tell the phone support that I need a new LCD and vertical sync cable. We'll see what the tech has to say tomorrow.

Apple came out and replaced the LCD screen and the vertical sync cable. After two hours, the problem re-appeared. I'm guessing next they'll replace the logic board.

I think it's mainly with the 27" models. Apple is replacing the whole unit for me. I guess they don't want to throw anymore parts at it.

Well Apple has really screwed the pooch with this release..

I've just received my 2nd iMac today (replaced one with some pixel issues).
2nd iMac also has a stuck pixel but oh well I decided to live with it UNTIL the machine has now started 1hr later flickering for a fraction of a second from time to time..

What the heck do I do now? Get YET ANOTHER replacement or tell them to refund me my money? The problem is I also purchased a printer with it so that I could get $130 cash back rebate that Apple was offering if purchased with a mac...otherwise I had no intention of purchasing their overpriced printers...but now I'll be stuck with it as it as been opened and won't qualify for a return.

I'm so bitterly disappointed with this release..

Apple has released a firmware update to fix these issues. Has anyone tried it yet? Did it fix it?

I'm mad that I just returned my problematic 27" last week. I would loved to have tried the ATI firmware update.

Mine is still running flawlessly, I am glad I didn't get one of the duds :-)

At least Apple service is wonderful and they try their best to fix things fast. I would have hated to have this happen on some windows machine you get from harveys or somewhere!

The 2 week delay never had anything to do with Quality control despite what a lot of people seemed to believe. Apple was happy churning them out to sell for the busiest purchasing time of the year, faults and all.

They are in high demand...and not surprising. They are great machines and considering many are going through replacements like underpants (myself included..currently on my 2nd iMac which also flickers) I can see why there is a shortage.

I received my i7 early this week. I had some flickering on day one but after a restart it seemed to settle. Yesterday the flickering was back so I called up Apple support. They got me to install the firmware update and so far so good. I'll believe it after a few days though.
