Default iMac dual screen to force 1440x900 resolution?

Hi there. I recently bought a 24" iMac (4G ram/1Tb hdd/nvidia 9400m) after lurking on this forum for a while. Most things are set up and working really well. The screen is enormous!! I do have a question though. I'm using a Samsung syncmaster 940bw as a second monitor and I'm wondering if there is anyway to set it at 1440x900 resolution as that is its native display. At the moment, the iMac is only letting me use very limited options (1280x960 or 1280x1024). I recall this issue happening on my old laptop but I managed to force windows to show me resolutions that weren't supported to use the 1440x900, is there an equivalent for mac? I've looked everywhere but am having no success! Except for macosxhints.com - Determine multiple display layout via bash script

But as a newb, I don't really know how to use Terminal as yet. Anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks!

Try using SwitchResX - available from About SwitchResX...

Are you using the external monitor via DVI or VGA?

(DVI is a usually a white connector with up to 24 pins in 3 rows on one side and another set of pins in a + configuration. VGA is usually a blue connector with 15 pins in 3 rows)

If you are using DVI the iMac 'should' detect the display. With VGA you can have problems (e.g. my 20 and 22" dell screens won't work at native resolution on my Mac if I use a mini-DVI -> VGA adapter)

Thanks for the replies

The enhancer didn't seem to do anything for me, so I ended up doing something with the terminal. Not sure exactly what I did, but managed to get the correct resolutions! I'm using a VGA adapter which was able to detect the monitor but not display them at the native res. Happy that it's working now
