Long shot - take the serial number to Apple Australia and ask for assistance tracing the IP next time the machine OS is updated.
At least lodge serial with Apple for any physical repairs.

There is usually an extra box to tick (and pay for) to get insurance, if you didn't tick that box and pay the fee, well your close to out of luck.
In normal situations, like when the package shows up busted, you get nothing if it wasn't insured. Your case may be a bit different since it has been opened and had the contents removed.
