Default RamCity 10 points / Next Byte 0

I'd just like to say a big thanks to Rod at RamCity for such a great service, and would highly recommend them for any of your Ram upgrades.

Unlike Next Byte where the staff seemed totally out of touch with what I would have thought was an easy request.

On Tuesday I decided to get a 2Gig Ram upgrade for my old iMac G5 (iSight), first checking in the G5 manual to see that it was possible to get a single 2Gig Module.

I checked with the Apple Store in Sydney but they actually referred me to Next Byte.

So off I went to my local Next Byte store.
After showing the guy the page out of the manual, and my system profile that I printed, he looked it up and said he could get it that afternoon.

He called later and said that they were both in.... I was surprised when he said "Both" as the iMac G5 has only 1 user accessible slot. After clarification, he had ordered the wrong type. He said he'd call back when he had the correct type in. He called on Wednesday morning to say it was in, I went down and found that he'd ordered 2Gig, but for a laptop, which is about half the size of a PC module and something that I would have thought was something he should have known.

He then checked with another guy, who said that the 2Gig PC modules didn't exist, I showed him the manual and the page from the Kingston website I had printed. He said I should try online or some other place.

I left feeling that these guys were pretty useless, especially after they had looked it up, and I had given them a copy of the page out of the manual to check, and it is there job to know, not mine.

I went home and the first thing I saw on the MACTALK site was the link to RamCity, I went online and ordered the module, a very easy process. About 15 minutes later I got a call from Rod who said that as it wasn't in stock it may take a week to get in, which I said was fine. Then to my surprise, that afternoon I received an email saying that it had been shipped and had a link for tracking, I collected it today (Friday) from my PO Box. Now that was service, and something that other companies could learn from.

Cheers

I have upgraded RAM in a G5 iMac—two user accessible slots—you sure your note referring to the G4 iMac?

The last of the iMac G5 (1.9 or 2.1GHz with iSight) had 512MB soldered to the logic board and only a single user replaceable slot, allowing for 2.5GB RAM in total. The OP is correct.

It was the later model 1.9GHz, with only one slot and 512 soldered onboard.

That was why I took them a printout of my system profiler and the page from the manual.

Yes, very annoying considering you spelled it out for them.

Your experience with NextByte TT, seems to be on par with mine going back a few years when they were in Dee Why ( Sydney ).
Hopeless is too kind a word.
They too ordered in the wrong type of Ram and then said it was my fault for giving them the wrong specs even though I told them which computer it was for ( I printed it out as well ! )
They sold me a router which would not work with my OS even though I told them what it was for.
They sold me the wrong DVI - VGA cable ( DVI-D not DVI-I ).
And several other mishaps...
I hope for their sake they lift their game after reading this and some other similar posts or they won't be around for much longer.
