Default Replacing Superdrive?

Hey there,

The CD/DVD Drive on my 20" Core Duo iMac went broke a while ago (Reads fine, except cannot burn DVD's).
Im buying a MBP early October which means that ill be selling my Mac. However ill obviously need to fix the Superdrive, right?

Anyways, How much would a Mac Techie charge to replace my Superdrive?

Cheers,

it all depends on your warranty status.

It'd cost a fortune to have a technician replace it, its not a small job.

Im most definitely beyond warranty. A private technician would have to do it. How much would that roughly cost?

heh

I have reason to believe they charge over $100 an hour, its at least an hour job its broken down like this.

Remove screws / ram etc
Remove glass from front of computer
Remove LCD
Remove other stuff in front of superdrive
Remove Superdrive and replace part.

I say you'd be looking at a bit more than $450

He says its a Core duo (not 2) so its probably not a aluminium iMac so the glass wouldn't need to be taken out - as there is none.

So yours is the white iMac with the big chin?

Thankfully they're not as arduous to work on as the newer iMac aluminium models, but they're still a pain, and not something you should takle if you're not familiar with how Apple screw, clip, glue and stickytape their machines together.

A replacement SuperDrive will be a bit under the $200 mark, and replacement should take a competent technician about 45 to 60 minutes. Rates vary from provider to provider.

If you ring any decent Apple reseller with an authorised service centre in it (such as most Next Byte stores) they can give you a fairly good 'guesstimate' on how much it'd cost for the part and the fitting.
