Default Flat Panel 15" iMac no power

Hi everyone. I've got a 5-6 year old Flat Panel 15" iMac — the dome model.

Over its lifetime it has sometimes been a bit 'flakey' with power issues. Over the years I would sometimes unplug the power lead from the wall in case of power surges etc. Sometimes it wouldn't respond immediately when I plugged it back in. I found that if I connected it to an extension cord or into a powerpoint that had just been used then it would power up. Sounds weird but true. I was a little concerned so I took it to my local Applecentre under warranty and it wouldn't repeat the problem for them!

A few days ago it was unplugged from the back of the computer and not the wall — something it hasn't always responded to that well. But now it won't power up at all. Zip.

I've tried (1) resetting the PMU (2) using a friend's power cord but with no success.

I've looked at a flat panel repair manual. I think the next thing I'll try is replacing the internal battery.

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

To be honest, it sounds like the PSU finally gave up the ghost.
The repair manual has a procedure for checking the output on the power supply cable - that will tell you if it's truly dead or not.

Default Flat panel iMac, No Power

For those that are interested in these machines — I've brought it back to life for now — it was the battery.

PRAM battery. Controls a few more functions other than the clock.

Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM

I'm happy for you. I'd really suggest buying a power surge protector. I bought one in 2006 for my original Sony Vaio and I'm still using it today with my beautiful Macs! Last year in August Perth had a very bad storm. Lightening struck my house and it burnt out every appliance plugged into a wall socket.. Accept for my iMac, macbook pro, Macbook air and Macbook. They were all attached to a power surge protector. I was honestly amazed. I have bought many things in my life, but that surge protector is one of my favourites..
