Are you running any internet intensive apps such as torrent programs? They can do this...

I get similar inconsistencies with my macbook to my airport... one minute the little 'radar' will show full bars - the next minute nothing.
I find if I move a little closer (by a meter or so) the macbook will find the network again and reconnect. I haven't worked out what other factors may cause the variable drop outs though.

Tried setting the channel used by the base station to something other than the default? A bunch of people in a street will get wireless routers, all of which default to channel 11, then everyone will get drop-outs.
