Default Internet drops out constantly.

The internet on my MacPro is constantly dropping out. I'm connected via Airport to and AExtreme base station over 802.11n/mixed b/g mode.

Airport will show that it is still connected, but there a no packets being sent or received. The only way to fix it is by manually turning off Airport in the menu and switching it back on. But even then it still only stays connected for a minute or so before dropping off again.

I've only discovered this problem over the last couple of days, and I can't figure out what is causing this. I haven't made any changes to my computer in the last few days that I can think of either.

Have you tried re-settint the airport? Turn off airport, then you will find there is a little recessed bottom on the airport. use a bent paperclip to hold it down for 5 seconds, then try. restarting the computer first, won't hurt.

Let us know how you go.

On the base station?

I don't think its a base station problem because I have other computers connected over wifi and they work fine. Its just this Mac Pro which keeps dropping out (even when it shows it still has full signal).

connect the computer directly to your modem/router. Try and eliminate any other reasons for error. Make it a process of elimination of reasons for the fault.

Are you running any internet intensive apps such as torrent programs? They can do this...

I get similar inconsistencies with my macbook to my airport... one minute the little 'radar' will show full bars - the next minute nothing.

I find if I move a little closer (by a meter or so) the macbook will find the network again and reconnect.

I haven't worked out what other factors may cause the variable drop outs though.

Hmm, I just started up in Safe Boot mode, then restarted, and now it seems to be functioning properly. No drop outs yet.

How weird...

Tried setting the channel used by the base station to something other than the default? A bunch of people in a street will get wireless routers, all of which default to channel 11, then everyone will get drop-outs.

Yeah, I set mine to channel 1, neighbours are on 11.

I don't think it was interference. Because after the reboot from Safe Boot mode, it seems fine. Could it have been some kinds of cache issue or something?

I know that your other machines aren't suffering form the same symptoms, but it would be a good troubleshooting step to at least rebooting (turn off for 30 seconds) you base station.

You aren't running any 3rd party services which scans for other networks? Ignore this suggestion if those kinda apps don't run in "safe mode"
